If you haven’t joined the Soy Curl bandwagon, what time is better than the present? I am obsessed with soy curls! They have such a fantastic texture, and this recipe of Breaded Soy Curls with White Pepper Country Gravy is no exception. The texture here is similar to a classic chicken fried steak, and the country gravy to go with it is absolute perfection!
You can buy Soy Curls here on Amazon, but I also really like to purchase them here from Butler Brand directly. Every time you order directly from Butler Brand they send you a little extra treat, and who doesn’t love trying new stuff?! I might also add that I have no affiliation with this brand other than I am purely a fan!
This recipe is relatively simple to make as well. Begin by soaking the Soy Curls in some “no chicken” Better Than Bouillon Broth, then draining, adding some Veganaise as a binder, and tossing with nutritional yeast and panko bread crumbs. You simply bake the Soy Curls until nice and crispy, whip up the gravy, and find yourself in comfort food heaven. Wooooooohooooo they are good!
I created these by using the oven, but they could also work great in an Air Frier. Using an air frier can create crispier Soy Curls if that’s what you’re going for. They are absolutely delicious either way!
Give these a try for a special occasion, or for a wonderful Sunday Supper. An ode to my Texas roots, this is truly a Southern Dish.
I’ll give you the recipe in two parts. First, the recipe for the Breaded Soy Curls, and second, the recipe for the white pepper country gravy. Whip it up and let me know how you like it! Yeehaw!
Breaded Soy Curls Ingredients:
- 1 Whole Package of Butler Brand Soy Curls
- 4 cups of boiling water
- 4 tsp. of “no chicken” Better than Bouillon Seasoning
- 1 cup of Veganaise (I like Follow Your Heart)
- 2 Cups of Panko Bread Crumbs
- 2 Tbs. of Nutritional Yeast (you can check out what this is in my Vegan Essentials Guide)
- 1/2 tsp. of black pepper
- 1 Tbs. of Olive oil or olive oil spray.
- Sprinkle with additional black pepper if you wish (it does add EXTRA spice)
Breaded Soy Curls Method:
- Boil some water in a small pot or teapot on the stove. When the water is boiling, mix 4 cups of boiling water with the 4 tsp. of veggie chicken bouillon to create a broth.
- Place the soy curls in a large bowl, cover with the hot broth, and let them soak for at least fifteen minutes. A lot of the broth with soak into the soy curls.
- Preheat the oven to 375º F, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- When the soy curls have sufficiently soaked, drain them of their broth, and place back into the large bowl. Mix in the cup of veganaise well. Then, add in the nutritional yeast and black pepper. Lastly, add in the panko bread crumbs. Mix well.
- Spread this mixture onto the parchment lined baking sheet, and drizzle with 1 Tbs. of olive oil or use a little bit of olive oil spray.
- Place into your preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes tossing halfway through.
- Serve hot with White Pepper Country Gravy! Enjoy!
White Pepper Country Gravy Ingredients:
- 4 Tbs. of Vegan Butter (I like Miyokos)
- 6 Tbs. of All Purpose Flour
- 4 cups of unsweetened vegan milk (I like Oatly!)
- 2 tsp. of white pepper (or less if you are sensitive to spice)
- 2 tsp. of onion powder
- 2 tsp. of salt.
White Pepper Country Gravy Method:
- In a medium skillet or saucepan, melt your vegan butter over medium heat until bubbly and melted.
- Add in the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until the flour has been fully incorporated into the butter, begins to clump, and turns a touch golden.
- Keeping it over medium heat, add in the vegan unsweetened milk, white pepper, onion powder and salt. Stir well until smooth, and keep stirring. When the gravy begins to boil a bit, lower the temperature to medium/low and continue to cook for 3-5 minutes until it becomes a bit thicker.
- Serve this gravy hot over your breaded Soy Curls and enjoy!
