Hearts of Palm “Crab” Cakes

September 1, 2020 by Taylor Kowald

Crab cakes are delicious. They are lumpy and tender and slightly sweet. These crabless cakes have all of the same qualities and are kind to the crabs, your stomach, and the earth!

I make these cakes with hearts of palm. They have almost no prep time and five ingredients! They are super simple! I stuck to a pretty traditional version of crab cakes with these, so if you feel like getting wild and adding your own ingredients, go for it! They are totally customizable! You could add some chopped green onion, chives, capers, or other veggies. Go with the flow of your own kitchen and your own taste-buds! You could also simply make these gluten-free if you use some gluten-free panko or breadcrumbs!

These make a fabulous appetizer and also a main dish if you add some sides. My recipe makes about six cakes, so if you are cooking for a larger crowd, or are really hungry make double or even triple!

I also include a recipe for my super simple tar-tar sauce below! It’s delicious and fun to dip! You can whip this up quickly while the cakes are in the oven! Do it!

I hope you love these cakes! They are fluffy, crispy, savory, sweet. A crabless cake dream if you will. Come on this hearts of palm cake journey with me! I promise that you won’t be disappointed!

Crab Cakes Ingredients:

  • 1 14 oz. can of hearts of palm
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup Veganaise (Follow Your Heart brand)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (Watch out here! Veganaise is a little salty, so I ALWAYS recommend that you taste as you go)
  • Old Bay seasoning – a small sprinkling on top (optional)

Crab Cakes Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 400° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and mix together your “crab” cake ingredients while the oven is heating!
  • Open your can of heart of palm and drain it. Pour the remaining heart of palm onto a cutting board and roughly chop! Put those chopped hearts of palm into a mixing bowl.
  • Mix in the rest of the ingredients (except the old bay- this is for an optional sprinkling).
  • The consistency should be fluffy. Make about six equal cakes and place onto your prepared parchment paper. Sprinkle with Old Bay seasoning if desired.
  • Pop them into the oven for 20-25 minutes. I carefully flip these about half-way through. They are semi-delicate in the baking process, so be careful! Everyone’s oven is different, so keep an eye on them after about twenty minutes. You could also spray them with a little olive oil spray if you want them to have more of the “fried” feel. I do this when I want something a little richer, but they are satisfying without!
  • While they are in the oven, you can make the optional tar-tar sauce. I put the recipe below. You could also make you own sauce, or dip them in something you already have, or put some hot sauce on them, or eat them alone! You will be satisfied either way!
  • I hope you enjoy! Let me know in the comments below! 🙂 I love these cakes, and I hope that you do too!

Tartar Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Veganaise (Follow Your Heart brand)
  • 2 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1/2 kosher dill pickle finely chopped
  • 2 dashes of Tabasco (optional)
  • Ground pepper to taste

Tartar Sauce Method:

  • Mix all of these ingredients together and enjoy!
